Genealogical Searches Unlike some other religious denominations, Friends have not traditionally maintained centralized records of our membership. However, individual monthly meetings congregations generally kept good records of their members’ vital statistics births, deaths, marriages, changes in membership. It is important that the ancestor you are researching formally joined the meeting. Such records were usually not maintained for non-members, even if they attended Friends worship. The vast majority of such records are not online and are not entered into computer databases, so a researcher will need to examine the records directly. If you know the name of the monthly meeting in question, and the dates you are interested in, you can usually find out where those archives are kept. If you only know the approximate location, and not the name of the meeting, your search may be more complicated, depending on whether there were multiple meetings that could have been involved. Monthly meetings usually belong to a larger group of meetings in the same general vicinity, called quarterly meetings, and those quarters, in turn, belong to even larger regional bodies called yearly meetings.

To make effective use of our map requires at least 37 “recent” Y-chromosome markers rather than the 12 ancient ones revealed by basic haplogroup tests, and SNP or subclade identification. Popular Perceptions and misperceptions “Racialist” descriptions of perceived “racial” characteristics of so-called sub-races Pontids, Dinarics, Mediterranids, Armenids, Saharids, Arabids, and so forth are still entertained in certain quarters.

Viewed in terms of the human genome, race as the term is commonly used and understood is a relatively insignificant or at best superficial and arbitrary consideration, and we are already seeing more reliance on purely genetic identification. Genetic diversity is a reality. While race, as the term is traditionally used, is fast becoming an outmoded concept, specific gene markers based on relatively “recent” mutations are naturally linked to persons sharing common origins i.

The legitimate scientific basis of regional racial distinctions but not racialism is genetic differentiation over thousands of generations. Genetic studies have proven beyond doubt that, ultimately, we are all descended from the same people. Implications of “recent” migrations and cultural factors involving the human race, particularly over the last 8, years, may be discussed even debated for decades to come.

Outside academic and scientific circles, much of the debate finds fertile ground among those seeking to prove that their ancestors were “black” or “white” rather than humans living in a certain region or identified with a certain culture. While it might be overzealous to define all such people as racists, it is clear that their views, based on interpretations and misinterpretations regarding gene markers and mutations originating in the last 8, years and the “historical” period of the last rather than those of the last 80, years, are outdated.

Prevalent stereotypes and ignorant authors outside Italy sometimes paint a superficial physical picture of Sicilians which bears little similarity to reality. While individuals having extremely light blonde hair represent only a small part of the Sicilian population, many Sicilians have blue or green eyes and light complexions and red hair.

In Sicily the range of complexions, from cream to olive, is striking, and combinations are interesting –blue-eyed dark brunettes and brown-eyed strawberry blonds.

The th anniversary of the French Revolution brings rejoicings for some people, sorrowful memories for others. For the Acadians, it brings to mind that tow of their kindreds, Anne LePrince and her daughter Anastasie, were put to death, at the time, for concealing a Catholic priest. Anne LePrince was born in Note from Yvon:

In your family history researches, if you come across a year written as , you rightly interpret that as meaning “in the period from to ,” the years being understood to be inclusive. If you see a date written as 2nd March /6 you might think it means the .

Prior to , all of England and her colonies were using the Julian calendar to report ecclesiastical, legal, and civil events. In , they all changed to the Gregorian calendar. In order to properly interpret dates prior to , one must understand the difference between the Julian and Gregorian calendars. On the Julian calendar the first day of the year was March When the switch was made to the Gregorian calendar, January 1 became the first day of the year.

This gives us a problem when a date is written as 15th day, 7th mo.

Chronology and dating As most genealogists know, dating conventions in English documents can cause problems even as late as the 18th century. These problems can become quite complicated in medieval documents. For example, medieval charters are commonly dated by specifying the week day, a nearby religious feast day, and the year of the monarch’s reign – a convention which clearly has little in common with the modern system of day, month and calendar year.

Although the process of dating medieval documents can seem off-putting, fortunately most of the necessary resources are available on the internet. Today’s genealogist can, with care, date a document at the push of a button, where yesterday’s had to hunt laboriously through tables. For further details, an excellent published guide is Cheney’s Handbook of Dates for Students of English History, to which I am indebted for much of the following information. The civil year versus the historical year The first thing to be aware of is that, in England, from about the late 12th century until the civil, ecclesiastical and legal year began on 25 March, nearly three months later than the historical year.

For dates in the intervening period, the historical year will therefore be different from the civil year. For example, the date we call 1 January historical year remains 1 January civil year , because the civil year continues until 24 March. Clearly, for dates between 1 January and 24 March, the civil year is one less than the historical year. Note that caution can be needed in dealing with very early records, as previously different conventions were used for the start of the year.

In Anglo-Saxon and Norman times the year was generally reckoned from 25 December i. Earlier still, the year sometimes began in September.

They did not use names for days of the week or months of the year since most of these names were derived from the names of pagan gods. A date such as August 19, will never be found. Why 6th month since August is the 8th month? The Quakers, along with everyone else in the American Colonies and England, did not begin using the Gregorian calendar until Under the Julian calendar the year began on March 25th; March was the first month and February was the twelfth month.

Such a dating practice satisfied everyone, including civil authorities, if for instance an inheritance was being established. The double year indicates that the old calendar was in use. Even though the Gregorian Calendar was adopted in , as mentioned above it was before the change was universally accepted. We are emphasizing this point here so that if exact days, months, and years are wanted, the old Quaker records must be used with great caution.

We would like to point out also that you may find secondary material genealogies are a case in point in which the compiler transcribed dates incorrectly — for instance. The dual year must be used until you are quite certain the locale in question has adopted the Gregorian calendar or until the Quaker records no longer have the dual form or the year is after The first date given is the Julian year, the second the Gregorian year.

Other months can be used.
