It has a vacuum line that connects to the intake and measures the amount of vacuum in the engine. Low Load In order to determine if whether transmission should shift, the modulator valve measures the load of the engine’s vacuum. Engine load is the measurement of how hard an engine works at any given moment. For example, coasting down hill will create a low engine load, while driving uphill with two passengers and a trunk full of luggage will create a high load. Thus, shift points for the transmission are figured according to the valve’s measurement. Inside the canister of the vacuum modulator, the valve works with a diaphragm and a calibrated spring to measure load. When the diaphragm senses changes in engine vacuum because of load changes, the diaphragm pushes against the valve while the calibrated spring moves against the movement of the diaphragm. Potential Problems If the modulator valve is not working properly, the transmission will not shift properly.
Next Page of R4 info. My manual explains how to adjust the cable, but it doesn’t seem like its describing too good cause I can’t follow it at all. Actually all the parts you need for the Lockup convertor to work is already in the unit. I have never seen the need for a brake light switch from a late model vehicle to cancel lock up of the converter.
The THR4 transmission was designed to replace the TH transmission. It is a GM automatic transmission designed for rear wheel drive vehicles. GM was feeling the pressure to produce more fuel efficient cars from both the government and consumers, the latter were just starting to discover the reliability and fuel savings that Japanese auto makers were offering.
The easiest way to tell them apart is with their pan shapes. But this photo also illustrates their outward appearance. CHP The password for cool ’90s street performance is Late-model automatic and manual overdrive transmissions are quickly becoming the sweethearts of the street set. Not that long ago, a fast street car meant compromises, including deep gears, high-rpm highway cruising, and poor mileage.
But the high-tech ’80s and ’90s have brought us more than just electronic fuel injection. They also delivered durable automatic overdrive transmissions. While the TH R4 has garnered most of the attention as the performance automatic overdrive of choice, companies such as TCI and Art Carr consider the TH R every bit the ‘s equal in terms of torque capacity and durability. There are several advantages to the TH R: With all these TH R benefits, we thought it deserved a closer look.
This is no more evident than with the TH R. This transmission is the same basic overall length as the Powerglide or Turbo automatics, uses standard flexplates, and uses the same spline slip-yoke as a ‘Glide or a TH The only thing that isn’t the same in terms of just bolting the transmission in the car is the rear transmission mount. The trans-mount location is roughly 6 inches farther rearward than for a TH using the same-style trans mount.

We offer several versions of this trans for applications up to horsepower. This trans has a low first gear ratio of 3. This trans was built with a Chevy only bolt pattern, but we have a package for Buick, Olds, Pontiac, and Cadillac people so you can enjoy the benefits of this excellent transmission too. We also provide a custom rebuild service for those interested in keeping the original trans but need an upgraded version to handle additional power mods.
Call for more details. The built-in display and keypad lets the user adjust and tune for their specific application and diagnose problems should they occur. The controller can can drive an electronic speedometer as well. No further adjustment or maintenance is needed. Properly tuned, your vehicle should have better gas mileage during cruising, and be more responsive to the throttle. Catalog PT R4HD Our heavy duty replacement model for vehicles originally equipped with the or those wanting to upgrade to an overdrive with a maximum of horsepower.
Where does the vacuum go on motor on a c6 transmission with a 351w motor?
January 6, Comments Once upon a time, manual transmission vehicles were much more fuel efficient than their automatic transmission brethren. Buying a manual over an automatic often lead to significant cost savings, and there were enough of them being sold and driven that selling and re-sale value were not a problem. Fast forward to today, and manual transmission vehicles are going virtually extinct. So, I decided to turn back the clock to see what kind of fuel efficiency a manual transmission vehicle back then had over an automatic.
I decided to select the Ford Escort my dad had a model pretty close to this one at one point.
How to Build a Ford C6 Select Shift Transmission: Step by Step As with the C4, the C6’s vacuum modulator ties manifold vacuum to transmission control pressure. The greater the intake manifold vacuum, the lower the control pressure for a sooner, softer upshift. to ensure good intermediate band hook-up and release. But you must be.
I am attributing that to my errors with the tape measure in my haste to get mine measured so I could get back into a warm house, and I am simply using the published specs. First up, let’s tackle overall length and case length. Overall length is important for the final driveshaft length and the case length is important for the fitment to the transmission tunnel. This will require shortening the driveshaft by a matching amount, so I know that no matter what I will be paying a visit to the local driveshaft shop, which I would be doing anyway – see the section on Inputs and Output for details on why.
That means the transmission should fit nicely without any major clearance issues. This is all good news and there are no major problems to solve here. Depending on the specific original and donor transmissions, the full length transmission is anywhere from a tad shorter to tad longer, making that part more a less a wash and a change in driveshaft length all but certain.

I’ve found that a lot of older threads that once had pictures are now non-valid links or dead image windows. I’d like to create a formal thread on Vacuum hook up specific to the with weber carb and DUI distributor. Over the last week and a few threads and searches, I’ve determined that at least some part of my current hook up is wrong. That said, below is a diagram of how my rig is configured right now.
Is there a right way or a wrong way to hook up my vacuum modulator? Answer: Since the transmission is so dependent upon the modulator to function properly, a good vacuum signal must be transferred from the intake manifold down to the modulator.
Are there any adjustments that can be made to the modulator? Should I use an external transmission cooler in conjunction with the oil cooler supplied in the radiator? This allows the transmission to have its own cooling system and doesn’t allow the engine water temperature to heat the fluid. What is the correct size cooler for my application? Unlike a lot of items you buy for your vehicle, bigger is predominately better when it comes to transmission coolers. The answer would be as big as you can get or to run multiple coolers in series, again staying away from the factory radiator cooler lines.
Where should I mount a transmission cooler? This allows for adequate airflow. If this is not possible then you should mount it in a location where the cooler can receive airflow. In extremely tight quarters, you may also mount the cooler and build an air dam that would allow the cooler to have air pass through it. What type of clearance should I have between the torque converter and flexplate before pulling the converter forward and bolting it to flexplate?
Is there an ideal way to measure the converter and transmission outside the car to make sure you should have the proper clearance between the converter and the flex plate before installation?

Houston Texas C-4 Transmission I think the C-4 is one of the best transmissions you can put in a classic stang. Ford just didn’t know how to tweek it just so. If you really want to get setup and your automatic type-o-guy:
The most common transmission swap with older Fords is from a C4, C6, or FMX to an AOD or manual 5-speed. The focus here is putting a Ford AOD into a classic Mustang and other vintage Ford applications, which are the more common swaps.
Distributor advance It doesn’t matter what kind of ignition you have, if the advance curve is not set properly it won’t make any power. The ignition is advanced so you reach peak cylinder pressure right after TDC top dead center. If the spark comes too soon the burning fuel will try to push the piston back down the cylinder before it reaches TDC, resulting in a loss of power and possible engine damage. If the spark is too late you will not reach full power and get poor gas mileage. There are two major factors that effect how much advance is required, engine speed and load.
You increase advance with rpm and decrease advance with engine load. You don’t need a distributor test stand to curve a distributor.
